The latest in a series of additions for the master plan developed by MTFA Architecture, Inc. features a 2,200 square foot Entry Foyer and accompanying family toilet room, handicap lift and Chapel/Parlor. The space is an extension of the existing Sanctuary roofline and finishes including a tongue-and-groove mahogany ceiling, porcelain floor tile and architectural lighting.
The project included a number of challenging aspects including the removal of the existing steeple by hand, the shoring and removal of a bearing wall supporting the balcony to open up the existing Narthex space and the construction of a 40’ brick arch topped by a 3-story glass curtainwall system.
The building code required installation of a fire sprinkler system throughout including the existing classrooms, office areas, Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall. Particular care was taken to minimize the intrusion of the exposed sprinkler piping in these last two areas by using the existing structure for concealment where possible and painting the piping to blend with the surrounding wood ceilings. The work was carefully phased so that during construction, church functions including administration, day school, and Sunday services were fully maintained. |
